Hits and Flops of 2009

tamil-hitsThe year 2009 was gone on as a year of contradictions, yet another year of mixed responses at the box office of kollywood.

2009 was really a boom year in Kollywood with record-breaking releases of 131 films. This is the highest number of films released in any year for nearly two decades. But a report in production seems that the hit ratio is just being 14% due to fall in quality of content.

So out of 131 films released in the year 2009, only the top super hit movies, average remained films and flops of the year were considered and given the information regarding their status.

Let us take a look at the hits, misses, surprises and disasters in Kollywood in 2009.

Hits of the year:

The list of movies which stood in the category of hits 2009 is as follows:

“Ayan”- Suriya and Tamannaah starrer action thriller pack directed by K. V. Anand is in the top list of blockbusters 2009.The movie was released worldwide on April 3rd 2009. Harris Jayaraj has given the music for the film. It was also released in Telugu as Veedokkade on May 1.

“Nadodigal”- SasikumarSamuthirakani duo returned back with a bang success of the movie. Though it was critically appreciated it gave good returns in terms of investment for the producers. The film was released in June 2009, acquired much positive reviews and finally being declared as a box office hit. Sasikumar, Vijay Vasanth and Bharani play the lead roles, with newcomers Ananya, Abhinaya and Shanthini Deva enacting the female lead roles.

“Padikathavan”- Dhanush and Tamanaah starrer much awaited action flick that was released in the month of January 2009 also created a big impression and declared as a box office hit.

“Kanthaswamy”- The much-hyped movie of the year Kanthaswamy that was released in the month of August, with Vikram and Shriya in the lead, though was not up to audience expectations but at last managed to enter the hit list.

“Aadhavan”- Suriya and Nayanatara starrer Ravikumar’s action comedy flick released in the month of October also make the money at box office and remained as a hit.

“Vettaikaran”- Actor Vijay is back in action after his many flops with the success of this movie released in the month of December. Anushka Shetty starring opposite Vijay also gained much rewards in the movie. The movie finally impressed the audience and stood in the list of hit.

“Unnaipol Oruvan”- Bollywood’s critically-acclaimed A Wednesday saw its Tamil version with Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal weaving magic on screen with Unnaipol Oruvan released in September also tasted success both at the box office and among critics.

“Peranmai”- Director Jananadhan’s action oriented movie with Jayam Ravi starring released in the month of October was also much appreciated and remained as a hit near box office.

“Kanden Kadhalai”- Bharath and Tamannaah starrer romantic entertainer released in the month of September also tastes the success of hit near box office. It is the remake of Hindi film Jab We Met.

“Yavarum Nalam”- Madhavan and Neethu Chandra starrer horror moderate budgeted movie released in the month of March produced fat returns to the producers. The movie was also released in Hindi.

“Pasanga”- Sasikumar’s other directorial venture Pasanga released in the month of May was also very well appreciated by the audience and remained as an above average film.

Popular hero Jeeva and Anuya starrer much comedy entertainer “Siva Manasulla Sakthi” and Nakul and Sunaina starrer “Masilaman” also made good returns returns at the box-office and remained as above average movies.

Arivazhagan’s “Eeram” released in the months of April and Paneer Selvam’s“Renigunta” released in December were well-appreciated for their freshness and simplicity in the script but do not make much money near box office and remained as an average films.

Director Bala’s epic “Naan Kadavul” and Priyadarshan’s “Kanchivaram” though appreciated critically do not do well much at the box-office.

Some other movies released in the same year like “Venila Kabadi Kuzhu”, “Malai Malai”, “Mayandi Kudumbathar” were also do not make profits to the producers.

5) Pokkisham

6) Yogi

Coming to the list of disasters, the biggest came in the form of the eagerly-awaited Vijay’s Prabhu Deva-directed “Villu”. Vishal’s “Thoranai”, Sarathkumar’s “1977”,Vijaykanth’s great white hope “Mariyadai”, a wonderful touching movie like“Pokkisham” and Ameer’s heavily hyped “Yogi” — all disappointed at the box office.

Though the music of much-expected Vishnuvardhan’s “Sarvvam” was a huge hit, the film fetched bad reviews, which made everyone feel that hugely talented directors can also go wrong.

So that’s how it is, a mixture of reactions! Excitement, disappointments, wins, losses — everything is a part of this industry. Now it’s a new dawn, a new beginning. Let’s hope for the best in the current year as some of the best films such as “Asal”, “Endhiran”, “Goa”, etc are coming soon in Kollywood.
