The magic number
So, you thought Ajith Kumar is disillusioned with the film world, and is pursuing his other passion - motor racing. Clarifies Ajith, who has signed up for one season of F2 racing: “My 50th film is for Cloud 9 (Dayanidhi Alagiri and Ratnavel), to be directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon. Since Gautham wanted some more time to complete the story and scripting, I decided to indulge in my passion.” He wants his 50th film to be “a win-win situation for all involved in the film”. Incidentally, after his last outing in F3, Ajith gave two hits Varalaru and Billa.
Kollywood ahoy!
Yesteryear heroines Radha and Ambika's brother Suresh is the latest to enter Tamil tinseltown. Says Suresh: “Way back in 1997, I did my first Telugu film Paradesi, directed by K. Raghavendra Rao. Later, I left for the U.S. to study film acting, and worked there for about eight years. After I returned, I acted in the remake of M.T. Vasudeva Menon's Neela Thamara, directed by Lal Jose.” Now, Suresh is acting in Perarasu's Tiruthani, starring Bharath. With three more Malayalam films in hand, including Red Friday, directed by director Bharathan's associate Majith, Suresh is happy he's done different characters so far. And, right now, he's set his eyes on Kollywood, where his sisters once ruled!
National relevance
Malayalam superstar Mammooty and our own action hero Arjun come together for Vande Mataram, produced and written by Henry, and directed by T. Aravind. Says Henry: “While the name was cleared for Malayalam, it took a while for Tamil. The film is ready for an April release. The story revolves around farmers' plight, and has national relevance. Mammooty and Arjun play police officers, with Sneha in a crucial role as Mammooty's wife.”
Town of snakes
Nanjupuram is a fictional village where snakes are more feared than worshipped. Of course, the film's hero Raghavan is not scared. But, due to circumstances, he develops fear too, and this affects his life, and his love interest Monica. “Nanjupuram draws a parallel between caste domination and snake poison — both dangerous,” says director Charles. “We shot with a lot of real snakes, many of them poisonous. But, it was a breeze for the film crew. Raghavan has also scored six songs for the film,” says Charles.

Oscar producers urge viewers to tune in early

It's going to be ``the most dynamic opening, from drama to spectacle to humor, that has ever been staged.''
The people behind Sunday's Oscars show are urging people to turn in early for one of the programme's best sequences.
Bill Mechanic, who is producing the awards ceremony with Adam Shankman, promised ``the most dynamic opening, from drama to spectacle to humor, that has ever been staged.''
Shankman said the show will be funny, lively and fun.
``People hate it when I say this,'' he said, ``but I always say this is the best-dressed reality competition show on TV.''
The two men joined film academy President Tom Sherak on the red carpet outside the Kodak Theatre for a brief news conference Friday about the big show.
Dismissing a gloomy weather forecast, Sherak said definitively that it will not rain at Oscar time. Mechanic quipped that it would ``rain humor.'' And Shankman said that when you produce the Oscars, there's no one you can't call, so ``I just called God.''
``Like everything in Hollywood, it's a negotiation,'' he said.
The show will be heavy on humor, thanks to the hosting duo of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, Mechanic said, adding that the Oscar show hasn't had two hosts since 1928.
Expect ``greater emotional content'' too, he said: ``We want this to touch people.''
The Oscar honchos also announced a new round of presenters: Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, Demi Moore, Zoe Saldana and Pedro Almodovar will appear on the telecast. And they urged viewers to tune in at the top of the program, which begins at 8 p.m. EST (0100 GMT) and will be broadcast on ABC.

PERFECT CHOICE: Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya
The wizard of sophisticated romance is back, and how! As a story Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya (U/A) says nothing new. But Gautam Vasudev Menon's treatment makes all the difference. Every frame spells class and every scene oozes realistic love not often seen in cinema.
When was the last time you saw Trisha look so ravishing? Or Simbu exemplify such finesse? The make-over of the lead pair, their romantic interludes and enactment reveal that the two have come a long way from the days of Alai, when they were first seen together, some six years ago. The credit, of course, goes to Menon, who has etched the roles with care.
Jessie (Trisha) and Karthik (Simbu) happen to live in the same compound and from the moment he sets eyes on her, he is the ever-yearning lover. But Jessie keeps blowing hot and cold, till the denouement when …
Simbu comes up with a commendable show, devoid of finger-snapping flippancy, bragging and bravado. You are now curious about his choice of roles post VTV. Well done Simbu! Neck and neck in the performing race is Trisha.VTV is easily her best show till date.
It has taken quite a long time for Babu Antony, the strict father of Jessie, to return to Tamil — you still remember him as the cantankerous villain of the Satyaraj film, Poo Vizhi Vaasalilae. Ganesh, the friend who tags along with Karthik everywhere, is impressive and his witty one-liners lend levity to VTV. Casual and catty at once, K.S. Ravikumar, who plays film director, is very natural.
The dialogue, which has a dig at Gautam Menon himself now and then, is enjoyable. For instance, Simbu says, when people go all the way to America following their sweethearts, couldn't he follow her to Alleppey - a reference to Suriya's U.S. jaunt in Gautam Menon's Vaaranam Aayiram!
Art director Rajeevan, a Menon team constant, whose weakness for white comes to the fore yet again, is an asset of VTV. His effort gains accent with the lighting, tones and angles of cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa. Trisha's outfits and saris are enchanting, thanks to costume designer Nalini Sriram — the colour co-ordinates add to the aesthetic appeal.
A.R. Rahman proves the past master that he is, once again. The songs in VTVsound unique in the sense that they do not always conform to the regular pattern of pallavi and charanam. Rahman has experimented a lot with the score and aiding him with apt lyric verses is Thamarai. Be it the innovative beats, the backing vocals that include Blaaze or the combination of instruments such as nagaswaram (‘Omana Pennae'), the music offers plenty of pleasant surprises. The ‘Thirukkural' couplet in a fresh refrain is one such.
The choreography of ‘Hosanna' is enjoyable too. But when again and again you see the same kind of dances in groups, monotony enters. Eventually when the narration gets protracted you begin to feel that probably the song sequences were one too many. The twist in the final scene is quite unexpected, but the impact would have been even greater if the pace had been maintained. The maker who brings you to the edge of the seat every time the lovers meet clandestinely could have easily tackled the tempo factor that has been given the go-by towards the end. So why didn't he?
Characterisations are flawless and go a long way in making the viewer identify himself with them. Twenty two-year old Karthik's true-to-life overtures, reactions and recklessness are just as you would expect from a director of Menon's calibre. It is his authentic depiction of Jessie's confusion that's all the more amazing — Menon's complete understanding of a woman's psyche bowls you over! So do the young lovers!

The HinduBollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan received high praise from British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.
Applauding the cinematic genius of Bollywood mega star Amitabh Bachchan, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown described the actor as one of the “greatest talents” of our time.
Brown spoke glowingly of the 67-year-old star as he presented him with the keys for a Mobile Diabetes Unit at a charity dinner here last night.
The bus, named ‘Amitabh’ in the honour of Big B, will help screen people in Mumbai for diabetes and has been donated by diabetes prevention charity organisation ‘Silver Star’, founded by Indian-origin Labour MP, Keith Vaz in 2007.
“It is a pleasure to be here with Amitabh Bachchan. I talked to him just as we arrived. I was saying that I had 4 million viewers in a TV interview. I asked how many people will watch his next film and he said 500 million people. That shows the greatness of this man,” Brown said.
“Some years ago, we met in India and now here. He is more prosperous now. He is one of the greatest talents of our generation,” the Prime Minister added.
Bachchan was joined by Bollywood actors Sanjay Dutt and Shilpa Shetty at the charity event.
Brown described Shetty as an “acting phenomenon and a committed humanitarian“.
“Your campaign for AIDS awareness is an inspiration. We all know the stigma attached to HIV and AIDS but no injustice should be allowed to last for ever, you are tackling one of the difficult issues,” he said.
Brown also said that the modern Britain will not be same without its strong bond with India.
“Let us be absolutely clear, modern Britain will not be the same without our strong bond with India and the enormous part played by the Anglo-Indian community here. With our strategic partnership with India, we can celebrate in everything we do,” the Prime Minister said.
“There is no doubt India is a modern global success story about which all of us should be proud of,” he added.
Bachchan thanked Brown for lending his support and encouragement to the cause and congratulated Vaz.
“Timely detection of this severe ailment can go a long way in its management to the noble cause,” Bachchan said.
Noting that Silver Star has plans to launch similar units in Kerala and Delhi, Bachchan said he looked forward to seeing “all of you in India, in the not too distant future.”
‘Amitabh’ is the second Silver Star Mobile Diabetes Unit in India. Last year Bachchan launch the first mobile unit in Goa, which has so far tested 2075 people.
”Seven million people in the UK have diabetes and have not been diagnosed, and over 50 million people in India are diabetic,” Vaz said.

Suriya to don commando’s role in ‘Kandahar’

After Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, Tamil star Suriya has given his nod to act in the Malayalam film Kandahar, based on the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight to Afghanistan in 1999, along with Mohanlal.
Suriya will don a commando’s role in the film, its director Major Ravi said.
“It would take another 3-4 months for the shooting to begin. I am still in the process of getting permission from the Army and selection of locations etc. The spade work is going on,” he said.
Bachchan, who will be playing the role of the father of a hijack victim, will be making his appearance in the second half of the film. Major Ravi denied that Bachchan’s role was only a guest appearance.
The storyline was narrated to the Big B during his visit to Kerala earlier this month and he liked it and readily gave his nod.
Resul Pookutty, who won the Oscar in Slumdog Millionaire, is likely to mix the sound for the film. The female lead has not yet been decided, Ravi said.
